Originally planted in 1987, the Soda Springs Ranch vineyard is situated within the Napa Valley AVA on the eastern side of the valley, nestled into the foothills of the Vaca Mountain Range.
While unmistakably Napa Valley, the site rises above the valley floor, offering a pure and uncompromising hillside expression that defines both its character and its fruit.
The vineyard spans more than 100 feet of elevation change, creating a mosaic of exposures, natural drainage patterns, and nuanced microclimates across the site.
Its foothill position delivers cooler nighttime temperatures and consistent airflow, encouraging balanced ripening while preserving freshness and precision throughout the growing season.
Beneath the vines, the land is defined by stone. Fractured volcanic bedrock forms the vineyard’s foundation, with only shallow layers of gravel and cobbly loam above. Exposed rock outcroppings and large boulders are woven throughout the landscape, underscoring the physical intensity of the site. These demanding conditions compel vines to root deeply into fractured stone, naturally moderating vigor and yields while forging a direct and unmistakable connection between vine, land, and place.
The vineyard is professionally managed by Hardin Vineyard Management, one of Napa Valley’s most respected viticultural teams. Their disciplined, hands-on approach ensures each vine is tended with precision, allowing the site’s distinctive hillside character and terroir to express itself fully and authentically.
Fifteen acres are planted to two classic Bordeaux varieties, with twelve acres devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon and three acres to Merlot. Each was selected for its natural compatibility with the vineyard’s elevation, rocky soils, and foothill exposure. These plantings consistently yield fruit of depth, structure, and natural concentration—shaped unmistakably by the site’s rugged terrain and demanding conditions.
The vineyard’s fruit has long been valued for its hillside origin and site-driven expression. Today, it contributes directly to wines produced by McCoy Family Estates, guided by the same philosophy of place, restraint, and authenticity that defines Soda Springs Ranch.
